    • What is billed as a set of philosophical short stories starts out that way with its first piece but then becomes much more straightforward thereafter. The opening story pits the "average man" against less-than-average circumstances. He feels that something is wrong, that he is sick somehow. He goes to a clinic for average men, housed in an office building with odd businesses. There, a doctor plies him with various messages about how sickness is actually what established normality and averageness [...]

    • This book had a surprisingly refreshing variety of themes and voices, but I was simply turned off by too many of the individual stories to give it a higher rating. I love short stories, and it's clear that JC Hallman is an excellent writer, but the only stories I truly connected with were Ethan, A Conjugal Cyst, and The History of Riddles. At times the writing felt farcical, but not in the clever way I'm sure he intended. I'll also confess to not being able to finish the short story that the col [...]

    • I confess, I pick books because of their titles, and this had a great one that caught my eye. But the collection of short stories is depressing and without deep meaning (and really not good). The fact that I had to wade though material in at least one story that was unnecessarily crude just made me go ahead and shut the cover on page 71.

    • mostly a really fun group of stories, especially the short story The Hospital for Bad Poets and Double Entendre. The Epiphenomenon reads like a humorous version of Kafka. I really recommend this.

    • Each story like a little treat from heaven. My favs: The Jockey, Ethan, and the title story Hospital for the Poets.

    • In all things, however, you act too familiarly with the spirit, and you have often made a wisdom into a poorhouse and a hospital for bad poets. -Nietzche

    • This writer is witty, smart, original. He helps you see the world through his wicked humour. Enjoyed each and every story.
